A Year On, Operation Sindoor's Lessons Linger

One year after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025 — a series of precision strikes targeting nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir — the geopolitical aftershocks continue to reverberate across South Asia. The four-day military exchange, conducted in direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives on April 22, marked a decisive inflection point in India's counter-terrorism doctrine.

A recently published Swiss military analysis by retired Major General Adrien Fontanellaz of the Centre d'Histoire et de Prospective Militaires concluded that India's air superiority "coerced" Pakistan into seeking a ceasefire, noting that the Indian Air Force struck 11 Pakistani air bases and radar installations, rendering runways inoperable. The strikes employed domestically developed systems — BrahMos cruise missiles, Akashteer air defence platforms, and Israeli-origin Harop loitering munitions — without dependence on foreign logistics.

Diplomacy
Pakistan's Global Profile Rises; India's Isolation Concerns Persist

Even as Indian military planners assert tactical superiority, diplomatic analysts note a paradox: Pakistan's international stature has undergone what The Economist described in April 2026 as a "remarkable makeover." Islamabad hosted direct US-Iran talks in April and has leveraged Donald Trump's ceasefire claim to present itself as a peacemaking actor. Critics within India's foreign policy establishment caution that no major power condemned Pakistan by name after Pahalgam or endorsed India's position during the conflict.

Modi's Five-Nation Tour: India Deepens Defence & Energy Ties
Prime Minister embarks on landmark diplomatic visit to UAE, Saudi Arabia, and three other nations, sealing strategic agreements worth billions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed Saturday evening on a five-nation diplomatic tour spanning May 15–20, with the United Arab Emirates as the centrepiece. In Abu Dhabi, India and the UAE signed six agreements spanning energy security, defence cooperation, and maritime shipping. UAE entities simultaneously announced investment commitments worth $5 billion in Indian infrastructure and manufacturing.

The visit acquires particular significance in the wake of Operation Sindoor, as India seeks to reassert its position as a stable regional anchor amid the turbulence of post-conflict South Asia. Officials describe the engagements as part of a deliberate effort to diversify strategic partnerships following what they consider insufficient solidarity from traditional allies during last year's conflict with Pakistan.

"India will not permit its sovereignty to be tested. Our partnerships must reflect mutual respect and shared interest."

Parliament
Modi Tells Parliament: "No World Leader Asked Us to Stop Operation Sindoor"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a forceful assertion in Parliament this past week, declaring that not a single world leader had asked India to halt Operation Sindoor — the precision military strikes launched on May 7 last year against terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The statement, made during a special session on the first anniversary of the operation, drew both applause and pointed questions from the opposition benches.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, while affirming the opposition's full support for the armed forces during the operation, demanded accountability for the April 22, 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. "Twenty-six civilians were massacred in broad daylight at one of India's most frequented tourist destinations," Gandhi said. "There were no security forces at the site. This represents a catastrophic failure of the intelligence and security apparatus."

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi echoed these concerns, noting that no medical facilities were present on the Pahalgam ground at the time of the attack. Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav questioned why the ceasefire announcement had emanated from Washington rather than New Delhi.

The Prime Minister countered sharply, stating that Pakistan's DGMO had proactively contacted his Indian counterpart on May 10 requesting a ceasefire — a fact corroborated by defence ministry records — and that the subsequent announcement by US President Donald Trump was an embellishment of events. "Pakistan's striking capabilities were destroyed. They had no option but to stand down," he said.

Tamil Nadu
BJP Scores Historic Victory in Tamil Nadu; Actor-Politician Vijay Stakes Claim

In a development that signals a seismic shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority in the state assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of Dravidian parties. Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who cobbled together 118 MLAs with support from the Communist parties and the VCK, staked claim to form the government as Chief Minister.

The result confounded most pre-election surveys and represents the BJP's first substantive foothold in the state. Political analysts attribute the shift partly to discontent over anti-incumbency, economic frustrations among youth, and the BJP's alliance strategy. The transition of power from the AIADMK-DMK axis to a BJP-led coalition is being described as the most consequential electoral outcome in Tamil Nadu in three decades.

Uttar Pradesh
UP Voter List Controversy: Massive Deletions Raise Constitutional Questions

A controversy of considerable magnitude has erupted in Uttar Pradesh over reports of mass deletion of names from voter rolls ahead of the 2027 state elections. Opposition parties, civil society organisations, and the Supreme Court have all expressed alarm. The Election Commission has been directed to furnish detailed district-wise data on deletions, with the apex court observing that the right to vote is a constitutional entitlement that cannot be administratively extinguished without due process.

The Samajwadi Party has alleged that the deletions disproportionately affect minority and Dalit communities, a charge the state government denies. An independent audit has been demanded by seven parties across the ideological spectrum.

India Cement Its Place as World's Fourth-Largest Economy

India has formally overtaken Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy in nominal GDP terms, a milestone confirmed by NITI Aayog and corroborated by International Monetary Fund projections for calendar year 2026. The country's economic size, driven by resilient domestic consumption, a booming services sector, and record foreign direct investment inflows, now stands at approximately $4.3 trillion.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr. Arvind Kumar stated that India aims to surpass Germany — currently ranked third — within the next three years, projecting a trajectory that would place India within reach of $5 trillion by 2028. "The fundamentals are strong: demographics, digitisation, and domestic demand form an irreplaceable trident," he observed.

Exports and imports both recorded double-digit growth in April despite supply chain disruptions attributable to the ongoing West Asian conflict between United States forces and Iran, which has complicated maritime logistics through the Strait of Hormuz. India's merchandise trade diversification strategy — including the recent India-UAE Free Trade Agreement — has partially cushioned the blow.

The trade deal, when concluded, is expected to boost bilateral commerce by an estimated £28 billion annually.

ISRO Charts Ambitious Course: 27 Missions, Human Spaceflight on Horizon

The Indian Space Research Organisation unveiled a historic mission schedule for fiscal 2026-27, comprising 27 separate space missions — the most ambitious annual programme in the agency's six-decade history. Of these, four are directly dedicated to the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, India's bid to independently send astronauts to low Earth orbit. The agency has coordinated with Axiom Space to refresh experiments for the rescheduled Ax-4 International Space Station mission.

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan stated that the Gaganyaan crewed mission remains on track for late 2026 and that all four astronaut-designates — Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla — have completed advanced training. "India will become the fourth nation to independently place humans in space. This is not merely a technological milestone — it is a civilisational statement," Dr. Narayanan said.

The remaining 23 missions include Earth observation satellites, navigation payloads for the NavIC constellation, a Mars orbiter follow-on study mission, and a joint lunar south pole lander with the European Space Agency. India's defence missile testing programme, Mission Sudarshan Chakra, will begin multi-layered tests this year targeting a completed shield architecture by 2035.

USA–China
Trump Arrives in Beijing; Historic Trade Summit Begins

US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Saturday to a grand ceremonial welcome hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the most consequential bilateral summit since the two powers imposed sweeping tariffs on each other in early 2025. The talks are focused on reducing the 145 per cent US tariffs on Chinese goods and China's retaliatory 125 per cent levies on American imports. Preliminary signals from both capitals suggest a phased de-escalation framework may be under negotiation, though no final agreement was expected on the first day.

For India, the US-China thaw carries complex implications. Indian exporters, who gained market share in America during the tariff war, watch nervously. The Trump administration's simultaneous 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports — which New Delhi has been contesting — remains unresolved. Trade officials confirm that India-US tariff negotiations are ongoing, with Washington describing progress as "cautious but constructive."

West Asia
US–Iran Hostilities Escalate Near Strait of Hormuz

Despite President Trump's assertion of a ceasefire, United States naval forces and Iranian military units exchanged fire near the strategic Strait of Hormuz this week, raising fears of a broader conflict that could severely disrupt global oil flows. US forces struck Iranian military facilities following attacks on American naval ships. The exchange has driven a fresh premium into global crude prices. India, which imports approximately 85 per cent of its crude oil, is closely monitoring developments. The External Affairs Ministry has advised Indian nationals in Iran to exercise maximum caution.

Pakistan
Pakistan's Asim Munir Consolidates Unprecedented Power as Chief of Defence Forces

Pakistan's General Asim Munir — elevated to Field Marshal in May 2025 — was further promoted in December 2025 to the newly created post of Chief of Defence Forces, granting him unified command of the Army, Air Force, and Navy for a five-year term. Indian defence analysts describe the concentration of power in a single military figure as a structural risk for civilian governance in Pakistan. The constitutional amendment enabling the post was passed by the Pakistan National Assembly with minimal parliamentary debate.

Russia-Ukraine
Russia, Ukraine Complete Major Prisoner Swap

Russia and Ukraine finalised a significant prisoner exchange this week — the largest since the war began — involving several hundred combatants on each side. The swap, conducted under Red Cross auspices, was completed despite simultaneous Russian drone strikes on Kyiv, underscoring the paradoxical nature of current wartime diplomacy. India, which has maintained dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv, welcomed the development as a "confidence-building measure" and reiterated its call for dialogue.

India-Canada
India, Canada Move to Rebuild Relations After Year-Long Chill

India and Canada have agreed to reinstate their High Commissioners after over a year of diplomatic estrangement triggered by Canadian allegations — contested by New Delhi — linking Indian government agents to the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The de-escalation, facilitated partly by sustained diplomatic backchannels and a change in government in Ottawa, signals a cautious resumption of bilateral engagement.

India-USA
Trump "Optimistic" on India Trade Deal; Tariff Talks Advance

US President Donald Trump expressed guarded optimism about progress in trade negotiations with India during remarks at a White House media briefing. The 50 per cent tariff regime on select Indian exports — imposed in early 2025 — remains in place, but both sides are engaged in intensive talks. Indian trade officials caution that any deal must address the asymmetric burden on India's pharmaceutical, textile, and engineering goods sectors.

"The world order is not breaking down — it is being renegotiated. India must ensure it sits at the table, not outside the door."

IPL 2026 Enters Final Fortnight; BCCI Under Fire Over Ahmedabad Shift

The 19th Indian Premier League, which began on March 26 and concludes with the final on May 31, has entered its most gripping phase. The Board of Control for Cricket in India controversially moved the final from its originally announced venue to Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, citing the scheduling of a critical ICC meeting. The decision has provoked resentment among two franchise camps and their local fanbases, with franchise owners privately expressing frustration over the late change.

Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders face off in a crucial league-stage encounter today in Delhi, with both sides needing a win to consolidate their playoff berths. The BCCI has separately issued stern warnings to all ten franchises regarding the infiltration of unauthorised persons into technical areas and dugouts — a practice the board has identified as a potential security and competitive-integrity concern, described in official communications as "honey-trapping."

With two weeks to go, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals remain the form sides, while Chennai Super Kings — now playing under a new coaching structure following the retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from all forms of cricket earlier this year — have shown a spirited revival in the back half of the league stage.

Monsoon
Monsoon Forecast: Timely Arrival Expected; Farmers Watch Anxiously

The India Meteorological Department's extended range forecast places the onset of the south-west monsoon over the Andaman Sea on or about May 20 — practically on schedule — offering measured relief to Indian farmers who endured a particularly harsh pre-monsoon heat wave across the Gangetic plains, Vidarbha, and Telangana. Temperatures in Delhi exceeded 45°C on three consecutive days last week, with heat-related hospitalisations rising sharply.

Meteorologists caution, however, that a timely Andaman arrival does not guarantee normal progression across mainland India. The El Niño moderation recorded in the Pacific Ocean suggests broadly adequate, though spatially uneven, monsoon distribution. The northwest — including Rajasthan and Gujarat — may receive below-normal rainfall, while the northeast and parts of the Western Ghats are forecast to receive surplus precipitation. The agricultural sector, which employs approximately 43 per cent of India's workforce and depends heavily on monsoon rainfall, watches these developments with acute interest.

Delhi Air Quality
Supreme Court Slams Delhi Govt on Air Pollution; Demands Action Plan

The Supreme Court of India delivered a sharp censure of the Delhi government this week over the capital's persistently hazardous air quality, describing the administration's response as "inadequate, inconsistent, and insufficiently urgent." The court noted that Delhi's AQI regularly breaches the 400 threshold during winter months — classified as "severe-plus" — and that years of directives have produced no measurable improvement.

The bench directed the government to submit a concrete, time-bound action plan within four weeks, covering vehicle emissions standards, industrial compliance, stubble burning regulation, and green space augmentation. The court also flagged the inadequacy of the GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) framework, noting that reactive measures are inherently insufficient when the base pollution load is already at dangerous levels year-round.

Hydroelectric Projects in J&K to Power Northern Grid by 2028

The Union Government approved a ₹12,000-crore package for the accelerated development of hydroelectric projects in Jammu & Kashmir, which carries an estimated untapped hydro potential of 20,000 megawatts. The projects are expected to feed into the northern grid by 2028 and reduce the region's dependence on costly thermal power. Environmentalists have raised concerns about the impact on river ecosystems and downstream communities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Cheetah Reintroduction Project: Kuno National Park Population Stabilises

The National Tiger Conservation Authority reported that the cheetah population at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh has stabilised at 21 individuals — 14 adults and 7 sub-adults — following the deaths of several animals in prior years due to infection and territorial conflict. A revised management protocol, including expanded territory and improved veterinary oversight, appears to be yielding results. India's cheetah rewilding programme remains the most watched ecological experiment in Asia.

Agriculture
India Becomes World's Top Rice Producer, Overtaking China

India has overtaken China to become the world's largest producer of rice, according to the latest FAO data. Total paddy output reached a record 135 million metric tonnes in the 2025-26 crop year. The achievement reflects sustained investment in irrigation, improved seed varieties, and the expansion of double-cropping in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the eastern states. India also leads global rice exports, holding approximately 40 per cent of international market share.

Pre-Monsoon Floods in Assam, Bengal Displace Thousands

Early and intense pre-monsoon rains triggered flash floods in the Brahmaputra valley in Assam and several districts of West Bengal this week, displacing an estimated 82,000 residents. The National Disaster Response Force has deployed 24 teams. Climate scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of pre-monsoon precipitation events to broader climatic warming patterns affecting the Bay of Bengal's evaporation dynamics.

The inaugural ceremony featured readings in 18 Indian languages, a gesture that drew sustained applause.

Notable releases at the fair include a deeply researched biography of the late Satyajit Ray in Bengali and English by film scholar Sandip Mitra; an anthology of translated poetry from India's Northeastern states compiled by the Sahitya Akademi; and a debut novel by a 24-year-old author from Manipur that has already attracted international literary attention. The English publisher Aleph, Penguin India, and Oxford University Press have reported unprecedented footfalls on their stalls, defying the narrative of print publishing's decline.

Operation Sindoor One Year Later: Victory, Ambiguity, and the Road Ahead

A year after India launched Operation Sindoor, there is a dangerous temptation to declare unambiguous victory and move on. The impulse is understandable. The Indian military performed with precision. Domestically developed systems met their test. The Pakistani military was compelled to seek terms. These are facts, documented and corroborated by independent international analyses.

And yet the full picture demands an honesty that nationalist triumphalism resists. Not a single of India's "strategic partners" issued a formal condemnation of Pakistan by name. The ceasefire announcement came from Washington, not New Delhi — whatever the actual sequence of events. Pakistan, far from being diplomatically isolated, has reconfigured itself as a peacemaker in the US-Iran crisis, hosted direct diplomacy between two nuclear adversaries, and attracted renewed international attention. Meanwhile, our own counter-intelligence is haunted by the question of how 26 unarmed civilians could be massacred in plain sight at one of India's most-visited destinations.

India did not lose the war. But it has not yet fully won the peace that must follow any military action. The government owes citizens not only celebration of the armed forces' courage — which is owed and is given — but also a reckoning with what failed on April 22. To hold these two things simultaneously is not disloyalty. It is the insistence that a democracy's strength lies in its willingness to examine itself.

"India's Fourth Economy Status Changes Nothing Without Quality Jobs"

GDP rankings are among the most misleading statistics in public discourse. A country of 1.4 billion can surpass nations of 50 million in aggregate output while its median worker earns a fraction of the comparison country's minimum wage. India's fourth-place ranking is a consequence of sheer population scale. The more important question — whether India's growth is producing adequate, dignified, secure employment for its young people — receives far less attention than it deserves. Until that changes, the headline is noise.

Opinion
On Sindoor: The Intelligence Failure We Must Not Forgive and Forget

The military response to Pahalgam was proportionate and necessary. But the intelligence failure that preceded it was egregious. Twenty-six people died because the state failed in its most fundamental obligation: protection. The fact that the operation which followed was bold and effective must not be permitted to erase what happened on April 22. Accountability for intelligence failures is not a political act. It is a democratic necessity.

The post-mortem examination of actor Prateek Yadav, who passed away earlier this week, has confirmed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
